Yazd is one of the oldest towns in the world. Look for badgirs (wind towers), on rooftops which function as an air-condition but healthier. Badgirs insure ventilation in the lower parts of a house and are made to catch the lightest breeze and direct it to underground room which is necessary in hot summer. Buildings in Yazd are made of cob and clay and are carefully maintained. The style of buildings is simple, exotic and traditional with clay color from sun-dried bricks. It is famous for its silk and other fabrics.
Amir Chakhmaq mosque located next to the bazaar which originally called New Mosque (Masjid-e Nou). The mosque was built by the effort and enthusiasm of Amir Chakhmaq's wife Bibi Fatemeh Khatun. Amir Chakhmaq was the Timurid governor of Yazd.
The portal of the mosque has a valuable calligraphy with a very fine marble mehrab (a place in mosques indicating the direction to Mecca, usually decorated with tiling and calligraphy). Around the mehrab is decorated with tiles and venerably is the Takieh Mir Chakhmaq, A 19th century building which served as a grandstand for the traditional passion play or Tazieh (It is acted during the morning month of Moharram, recording the martyrdom of Imam Hossein, the third Saint). Presently, the free space in front of the monument has turned into a square with a new appearance of planted trees and flowers rises of the Holy Koran have been etched over stone.
Zoroastrian fire temple attracts Zoroastrians & other people from around the world. The sacred flame apparently been burning for the last 3000 years, (transferred from its original site in 1940). Also, Ghaleye Asadan (Fortress of Lions), in the northeast of Yazd houses another Zoroastrian eternal flame which was transferred there about 20 years ago. Also, visit other Zoroastrian sites. Tower of Silence built on two hills. You may see broken human bones because Zoroastrians thought burying remains would contaminate the Earth so they left the corpse on platforms. Today, they are buried in concrete graves.
Alexander’s (Eskandar in Farsi) prison famous prison was built by Alexander, the Great. Visit the prison and the small display about the old city of Yazd.
Doulat garden is the residence of Karim Khan Zand, the former ruler with beautiful stained glass windows which was built in about 1750. It is famous for having the highest Badgir (wind tower), 33m high (109 feet). There is also a beautiful garden.
